The film's title refers to the semi-conscious fugue state that precedes the taxidermist's epileptic seizures, inducing a sense of disorientation and dread that Bielinsky uses to deepen the film's psychological impact. Darín's dour, worried expression is a fascinating focal point for his character's unpredictable journey into the heart of darkness, and The Aura's primary setting, in the thick forest of Patagonia, is a perfect complement to the film's ominous atmosphere and deliberately ! paced intrigue. As far-fetched as it may seem at times, the plot's heightened reality remains utterly convincing, and Bielinsky demonstrates an uncanny knack for escalating suspense in quietly intense situations. From start to finish, The Aura is clearly the work of a filmmaker with seemingly limitless potential, and we can only wonder about the excellent films Bielinsky would have made had he lived. Eun-yi (Jeon Do-yeon) joins the household of a slick, wealthy businessman and hi! s very pregnant wife. Under the tutelage of an older housekeeper, Eun-yi performs her duties impeccably and considers herself lucky to have the job. As the elegant tone of the goings-on in these opulent surroundings grows more tense, the husband strays from his wife's bed to Eun-yi's quarters, where he asserts his dominion with masterful entitlement. Her bewilderment quickly melts, and she becomes addicted to his adulterous visitations. But nothing that goes on escapes the eyes of the older housekeeper, or the young wife's evil mother, who turns her daughter into a pawn in an increasingly complex sexual conspiracy. When Eun-yi gets pregnant herself, the simmering pot of melodramatic tension nearly bursts, held in check only by the skill of director Sang-soo Im and a cast that keeps the titillation at a gentle simmer. Because the cruelty and kinkiness are kept so coolly restrained, the Grand Guignol finale comes as that much more of a delirious shock. The film's visual style! celebrates the gothic as well as the flamboyant aspects of th! e story, and is significantly bolstered by the lush production design and supple cinematography. Low on plot and high on self-discovery, High Fidelity takes a good 30 minutes or so to find its groove (not unlike Cusack's Grosse Pointe Blank), but once it does, it settles into it comfortably and builds a surprisingly touching momentum. Rob is basically a grown-up version of Cusack's character in Say Anything (who was told "Don't be a guy--be a man!"), and if you like Cusack's b! rand of smart-alecky romanticism, you'll automatically be won over (if you can handle Cusack's almost-nonstop talking to the camera). Still, it's hard not to be moved by Rob's plight. At the beginning of the film he and his coworkers at the record store (played hilariously by Jack Black and Todd Louiso) seem like overgrown boys in their secret clubhouse; by the end, they've grown up considerably, with a clear-eyed view of life. Ably directed by Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons), High Fidelity features a notable supporting cast of the women in Rob's life, including the striking, Danish-born Hjejle, Lisa Bonet as a sultry singer-songwriter, and the triumphant triumvirate of Lili Taylor, Joelle Carter, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Rob's ex-girlfriends. When a Medieval World theme park worker (Lawrence) is magically transported back to 14th century England, he must do battle with an evil king, deadly assassins - and really bad plumbing!In Black Knight, Martin Lawrence plays an amusement park employee who is magically transported back to medieval times and helps return a queen to her rightful throne (while learning some valuable lessons along the way). Despite the script's lack of logic and originality, Lawrence is an engaging performer, with a loose-limbed amiability that makes him most enjoyable company, even if he's not necessarily a better actor than most comedians. If Lawrence ever does a movie with a decent script, he might really have something; as it is we'll have to settle right now for the cheesy yet funny sight of Lawrence teaching a medieval band to play some Sly and Family Stone. --Bret FetzerWhen a Medieval ! This isn't on par with Sayles's best work (and reviews were predictably mixed), but there's not a false note anywhere, and the cast (including Daryl Hannah, Marcia Gay Harden, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lili Taylor, Susan Lynch and Mary Steenburgen) is uniformly superb. Sayles isn't playing social commentator here, and that's to his credit. Instead, Casa de los Babys is a sensitive film about a sensitive subject, allowing viewers to draw their own conclusi! ons. --Jeff ShannonDirector John Sayles has long excell! ed in fi lms driven by character-rich interpersonal relationships, and this tale of six disparate women who find themselves thrown together in a South American motel waiting for bureaucrats to process their adoption papers for a local orphanage is no exception. The retro doo-wop of Las Zafiras, sultry ballads of Broadway star Rita Moreno and spare modernism of Lhasa prove that influences migrate freely both ways across the equator, while Carlos Puebla and Ruben Blades display the compassion beneath their oft-politicized music.
